چکیده

We consider the optimal control of a production inventory-system with a single product and two customer classes where items are produced one unit at a time. Upon arrival, customer orders can be fulfilled from existing inventory, if there is any, backordered, or rejected. The two classes are differentiated by their backorder and lost sales costs. At each decision epoch, we must determine whether or not to produce an item and if so, whether to use this item to increase inventory or to reduce backlog. At each decision epoch, we must also determine whether or not to satisfy demand from a particular class (should one arise), backorder it, or reject it. In doing so, we must balance inventory holding costs against the costs of backordering and lost sales. We formulate the problem as a Markov decision process and use it to characterize the structure of the optimal policy. We show that the optimal policy can be described by three state-dependent thresholds: a production base-stock level and two order-admission levels, one for each class. The production base-stock level determines when production takes place and how to allocate items that are produced. This base-stock level also determines when orders from the class with the lower shortage costs (class 2) are backordered and not fulfilled from inventory. The order-admission levels determine when orders should be rejected. We show that the threshold levels are monotonic (either nonincreasing or non-decreasing) in the backorder level of class 2. Using numerical results, we compare the performance of the optimal policy against several heuristics and show that those that do not allow for the possibility of both backordering and rejecting orders can perform poorly.

The Variable Lead Time Stochastic Inventory Model with a Fuzzy Backorder Rate

Cost and operation of inventory depends a great deal on what happens to demand when the system is out of stock. In real inventory systems, it is more reasonable to assume that part of the excess demand is backordered and the rest is lost. However, the amount of backorders (or lost sales) often incurs disturbance due to various uncertainties. To incorporate this reality, this article attempts to...

Inventory Management Under Random Supply Disruptions and Partial Backorders

We explore the management of inventory for stochastic-demand systems, where the product’s supply is randomly disrupted for periods of random duration, and demands that arrive when the inventory system is temporarily out of stock become a mix of backorders and lost sales. The stock is managed according to the following modified (s , S) policy: If the inventory level is at or below s and the supp...

A Dynamic Inventory Model with the Right of Refusal

We consider a dynamic inventory (production) model with general order (production) costs and excess demand that can be backordered or refused by the rm. A unit backordered incurs a backorder cost, a unit refused incurs a lost sales charge. Endogenizing the sales decision is necessary in the presence of general convex order costs so that the rm is not forced to backorder a unit whose subsequent ...

Optimal Control of Assemble-to-Order Systems

We consider the optimal control of an assemble-to-order (ATO) system with m components, a single end-product, and n customer classes. Demand from each class occurs continuously over time according to a Poisson process. Components are produced in separate production facilities, each with a finite production rate and exponentially distributed production times. Components can be stocked ahead of d...

Estimation of the cost function of a two-echelon inventory system with lost sales using regression

Multi-echelon inventory systems are one of the most important and attractive areas in modelling supply chain management so that several researches and studies have been done about. In this paper, the total cost function of a two-echelon inventory system with central warehouse and many identical retailers controlled by continuous review inventory policy is estimated. We have assumed the demand i...
